Yay, we are in Alaska, in preparation for our cruise. Arrived late afternoon and will be leaving on the cruise tomorrow so just had a quick look around Ketchikan.
Located at the southernmost end of Alaska’s famed Inside Passage—a network of waterways that snake through some of the most stunning wilderness in the world. Ketchikan is best known for three things: salmon, scenery, and a rich Alaska Native culture. It’s also home to rich wildlife including black bears, wolves and bald eagles.
First impressions – it’s a very blokey place. Lots of hairy, big, middle-aged men in Western shirts here for the fishing. It’s fishing paradise here! Sea planes coming and going all the time.
And it was a nice temperature in August – probably 18C. Very overcast and damp though. Cloud down to about 50m. Same next morning.
We visited the Creek Street historical area which is the main tourist attraction and it was actually great! This area runs along the river and is famous for being the red light district in the first half of the 20th century.
Afterwards we shopped for some rubber boots (gum boots to us Australians). They were quite cheap and so we left them behind in Canada after our cruise. And if you are wondering why we needed boots for a cruise well it’s not your normal type of cruise! Read about our Alaskan cruise to find out all about it.
